CANADA REFUSES 3 OUT OF EVERY 4 APPLICANTS FROM AFRICA THAT APPLIED FOR STUDY PERMIT

Canada recently has been the preferred choice for many candidates who want to study both at the undergraduate or postgraduate level. There are so many benefits that students get when they study in Canada. Recently there has been an increase in the number of applicants applying to study in Canada especially from African countries. A report recently released by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and reported by Polestar Student Immigration News reported that in the first five months of 2019, three out of every four African students who applied for a study permit to Canada had their applications rejected.

According to IRCC statistics, the breakdown of the report from January to May 2019 showed that Nigeria is the third highest country with rejection rate a position it shares with Pakistan. Algeria had the highest followed by Cameroon. Morocco had the lowest rejection rate among the African countries followed by Ghana.

Canada recently came out with a 5 years strategy to get more students from 11 countries of the world. Only Morocco and Senegal made the list in Africa. Applicants from these 2 countries can apply through the Student Direct Stream (SDS), which fast tracks study permit applications, joining China, Vietnam, India, the Philippines and Pakistan.

According to the IRCC, “Student Direct Stream applicants have additional up-front requirements as part of the SDS process as they must submit more proof that they have the financial resources and language skills to succeed academically in Canada.”

The main reasons why a lot of study permit applications are refused include lack of social ties in one’s home country, insufficient funds for study and living expenses, poor academic plan and purpose of visit, security threat, incomplete, inaccurate or fraudulent applications.
