GETTING THE IMMIGRATION OFFICERS NOTES THROUGH ATIP

The Access to information and Privacy (ATIP) Act  is a  Law that allows people to have access to information about them or other people that are stored with the Canadian government. A whole lot of information is with government that you can request access to, but for visa application the record that most times we  are interested in is what we call Global Case Management System notes(GCMS). GCSM is the information technology management system used by IRCC to store and manage immigration related files. The ATIP can be used to make a request to get the GCMS notes which I call the “backend notes” of the visa officer. This detailed are kept on record with the government. Requesting for this notes will give you access to the real reasons why your application was refused.

To make an ATIP request, you must either be a Canadian Citizen, Permanent Resident or an individual or corporation physically present in Canada. If you are a foreign national, you will need to appoint a representative who will make the request on your behalf.

Submission of an ATIP can be done online or sent by mail. The average processing time is usually 30 days but can differ depending on so many factors that can also include the volume of work available at the time of submission.You will need to pay a fee of $5 to apply for it. Your request will be processed by CIC and it will be sent back to you either through email or CD depending on what you selected while submitting your request.

The report that is always sent is about 40 pages long. This report is the complete details of what your application went through before a final decision was reached by the immigration officer.
