A whole lot of criteria are used to assess eligibility for migration to Canada. One of such is Language proficiency. Language proficiency is a very important factor when planning to migrate to Canada through the Federal Skilled Workers Program (FSWP). There are so many language tests that can be used but today we will be talking on International English Language Testing System (IELTS).
As an immigration Consultant, I have had many candidates come to me asking one same question. What is the score I am expected to have in the IELTS exam? This question is very important because if you know from the start what scores you should have, it can help guide you on how well to prepare for the exam.
There are different types of IELTS exam. The one that is required for the Federal skilled worker program is the General examination. The IELTS assesses ones skill in the following areas.
To understand the minimum score that you are expected to have, it will be good to define what Canadian Language Benchmark(CLB) means. The Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) standard is a descriptive scale used to objectively assess language proficiency. For IELTS the CLB required for FSWP applicant is CLB 7, which is equivalent to a score of a minimum of 6 in all 4 categories of the exam.
|IELTS GRADING USING CLB|
|CLB Level||Ability: Speaking||Ability: Listening||Ability: Reading||Ability: Writing||Points per ability|
|7||6.0||6.0 – 7.0||6.0||6.0||4|
|10 and above||7.5 – 9.0||8.5 – 9.0||8.0 –9 .0||7.5 –9.0||6|
Even though the minimum required by Immigration, Refugees and Citizen Canada (IRCC) is CLB 7, we always advise our clients to aim to score better than that. It is obvious that the higher your scores, the better your chance of being eligible for the program. Our own minimum recommended score is CLB 9 (Listening 8, Speaking 7, Reading & Writing 7). When you score a minimum of CLB 9 you are likely going to be ranked higher in the pool, which may lead to you getting an invitation to apply through the express entry.
In conclusion, having a better score than the recommended CLB 7 in IELTS will give candidates an edge over others who have CLB 7. We advise that candidates take time to practice for the exam so they can score higher than the minimum required mark.
